IKEA USA Charged with Violating Federal Labor Law

BOSTON — The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has filed a complaint against IKEA USA, saying that the company’s store in Stoughton, Massachusetts, uses unfair labor tactics. The complaint says that the company broke federal law by asking workers about their support for a union in a way that wasn’t allowed. The lawsuit also says that the company’s social media policy is too broad and gets in the way of employees’ rights to engage in protected activities.

Nancy Goetz, who works at the IKEA store in Stoughton, said, “My coworkers and I worked together to make IKEA better because we love our jobs and believe in the company’s values.” “In other countries, IKEA and the unions of its workers work together to solve issues. I never thought that IKEA would let managers scare and question us. I thought IKEA would be better. I thought my rights would be taken care of.”

IKEA Group has signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which is an international agreement that says companies can’t get in the way of workers’ right to join together. Conventions 87 and 98 of the International Labor Organization, which is an agency of the United Nations, have been added to IKEA’s internal code of behavior. Conventions 87 and 98 are about the freedom to join groups and the right to deal collectively.

The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), a law that protects workers’ rights to take action as a group, form unions, and deal as a group, protects workers’ right to freedom of association. The Act also says that employers can’t use certain methods of coercion or intimidation to stop workers from practicing their rights under the Act. Unfair labor practices, like using methods that aren’t allowed, are what the NLRB goes after.

Marc Perrone, International President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), said, “This complaint shows that IKEA does not treat hard-working American families with the same respect that it shows to workers in other parts of the world.” “Every American worker has the right to get together and work as a group to make their jobs better. The UFCW stands with these workers, and together we’ll hold IKEA to a better standard.
