What is the controversy around Shubh?
In March of this year, the Canadian-Punjabi artist caused a stir when he posted a skewed map of India on his Instagram story. He left out the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northeastern states, which stood out.
He wrote “Pray for Punjab” under the picture. The singer got a lot of flak for the post on social media. Later, the singer took down the map and put up a sign that said “Pray for Punjab” but didn’t have a picture.
Shubh’s post came as the cops were going after self-proclaimed Sikh preacher and ‘Waris Punjab De’ leader Amritpal Singh and his followers. After the Punjab government shut down mobile internet service in the whole state, he shared the picture online.
From September 23 to 25, Shubh was supposed to play in Mumbai, India. He was also supposed to do shows in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The singer’s India trip was canceled, the ticketing app BookMyShow said on September 20.
The youth branch of the BJP, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), took down posters for the singer’s upcoming show, saying that he can’t perform because he supports the Khalistani movement. The group has been protesting in Mumbai for a few days, asking that Shubh’s show in India be stopped.
“Khalistanis, who are against India’s identity and unity, have no place here. We won’t let the Canadian singer Shubh play on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s land in Mumbai…”If the organizers don’t take the right steps, there will be a revolt,” BJYM President Tajinder Singh Tiwana told the news service ANI.
BJYM has also asked the Mumbai police to file a FIR against Shubh “for waging war against the Government of India and posting anti-government posts.”
The singer wanted to show that Punjab is not part of India and spread the Khalistani message, according to the letter that BJYM sent to the Mumbai police.
