The 20 most popular Xbox games of all time, according to Bing

20. The 15th Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy isn’t exactly a popular name when it comes to Microsoft’s system, but we’re happy because Final Fantasy 15 is one of the best RPGs of the year and one of the best Xbox One games. It does a great job of combining the huge open worlds of Western RPGs with Final Fantasy’s over-the-top anime silliness by making a world based on the roads and byways of Middle America and filling it with dangerous monsters, huge crystals, and powerful magic.

Final Fantasy 15 sometimes feels like a strange mix of ideas, but when you put everything together – the strange world, the exciting real-time fights, and the likeable characters who stay with you the whole way – it becomes much more than the sum of its parts. It turns out to be one of the best Final Fantasy games in a long time, so the wait was well worth it.

19. The Xbox game Cuphead

Cuphead is finally out, after some delays that got people bored. It’s already one of the best Xbox One games ever, especially if you like shooting. The art style comes from Disney’s Silly Symphonies and Betty Boop movies from the 1930s.

The game is like Mega Man, Contra, Metal Slug, and Gunstar Heroes in how it works. Even though the levels aren’t very big, that’s not the point. What matters is how hard it is to dodge bullets and figure out how the monsters move. Everything is fun to beat and tries your skills and abilities in interesting ways.

18. Halo: The Master Chief Collection

*prepares to hear the complaints* Yes, we know that this game had a lot of problems, but now that they’ve been fixed, there’s no question about the quality of the work or its place on our list of the best Xbox One games. Bungie’s genius and 343’s love come together in a package that really does honor a legacy that changed the game industry. When we look at The Master Chief Collection, we wonder if Halo has always looked this good. It’s been cleaned up, given a new coat of varnish, and put back on show. What do you know, anyway? Almost certainly.

17. NieR: Automata: The Gods Edition

Nier: Automata – Become as Gods Edition came to Xbox One a little late, but it was worth the wait. It’s a 4K version of Platinum’s strange action-adventure game with downloadable content and more outfits. It’s an odd and strange game about androids who try to figure out what life is all about by beating up robots and making references to other games.

When you’re not learning the acrobatic gunplay, the camera plays with angles that make this a top-down shooter or a side-scrolling brawler. Some other interesting ideas include a chip system that lets you automate parts of the game that you might have trouble with. For example, if you’re not very good at dodging, an auto-evade chip can do it for you while you control everything else in battle. This strange, unique, and interesting game is coming to Xbox in its full form.

16. Rainbow Six Siege (Xbox Game)

Rainbow Six: Siege’s first few minutes feel more like a horror movie than a fast-paced first-person shooter. Through the roof, you can hear the sound of feet walking in combat boots. Home Alone fortifications are made by the defenders. Was that a rope-climbing buckle squeaking? Most scary games are not as dramatic as this one. And when everything goes to hell, you are thrown into a deep, strategic, and cruel fight. By far, this is the most intelligent online shooter on Xbox One. It gives you a lot of options for how to play and is designed to make you want to play it again.

15. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

From Software’s hack-and-slash game is even harder than Dark Souls. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is very hard, but the difficulty is perfectly balanced, so it never feels too unfair. This game is good for people with strong nerves because it helps them keep their anger in check.

What did you think of the boss fights? Monster apes and their deadly poop can beat even the best shinobi. This is because they have to be able to fight and block at the same time. Don’t bother. But when you learn how to fight quickly and accurately in Sekiro and beat its hardest enemies, you get a rush that is hard to beat.

14. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

bing most popular xbox games of all time

Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the most original, violent, brave, funny, and smart shooters ever made. The New Colossus, the sequel to MachineGames, builds strongly on everything that came before. The New Colossus is a very important book because it takes BJ Blazkowicz’s very personal war into an alternate 1960s and an America run by the Nazis.

It’s a smart, sensitive, and emotional talk about callousness, racism, and abuse that always knows how to be funny. Big robot teeth and hatchet blades are used to show how people fail and how bad society can be. It’s a game that shows both heart and brains in every way, but never more than when it comes to the fine art of killing Nazis in a bloody, balletic way.

13. Devil May Cry 5 (a game for the Xbox)

Devil May Cry 5 is the best game Capcom has ever made. It takes the best parts of Ninja Theory’s great DmC in terms of style and looks and then calls back to the series’ loved, finger-burning past with combo-heavy action and a cast of fan-favorite characters.

Our three heroes, Nero, Dante, and V, a dapper newcomer, all have unique, over-the-top ways of fighting with strange weapons (or animal friends, in V’s case) that make them play in very different ways. In our review of Devil May Cry 5, we said, “It looks and plays better than ever. It’s like Devil May Cry, but even better.”

12. Makeover of Resident Evil 2

The best way to come back is with Resident Evil 2 Remake. The decision to remake the classic horror game from scratch with a game that feels just as important and powerful as the original 1996 version paid off.

It turns the original idea of a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City into a beautiful-looking game with new controls and a camera that feels fresh and scary as you fight zombies, jump scares, and the always-chasing MR. X to stay alive. It’s sleek and looks great, and both horror and action fans should buy it.

11. Monster Hunter World

If you have never played a Monster Hunter game before, you can ignore all the talk about how this one is the “most accessible yet.” If you’ve never played “Creature Killer” before, you’ll find it strange and hard to understand. But if you keep playing Monster Hunter World, you’ll see what all the fuss is about as you hunt monsters, kill them, and collect their parts to make gear for doing harder jobs.

This game is all about that core loop as you explore stat boosts, different types of attacks, and trying to master a wide range of weapons with wonderfully over-the-top and excessive designs. When you play with friends and plan your classes, weapons, and tactics together, it really comes to life. Battles take a long time and require a lot of skill and teamwork, but the hunt is everything, and killing a monster is a great feeling.

10. A Way Out

Most co-op games involve helping a friend get over a wall or open a door that can only be opened by two people at the same time. Some of that is in A Way Out, but the two main characters do so much more in the whole book. Both players are often given different but related goals that keep them working together without making them feel like they are stuck together.

The game makes good use of both players’ time, from getting out of jail to fixing cars. It also has great set pieces, intense moments for the characters, lighter moments, and a really memorable ending.

9. The Fallout 4 (Xbox Game)

We had a good idea of what would happen. Because it’s big and has bugs, it’s called Bethesda. Fallout 4 is a clear next step. It has the same kind of aimless travel, light humor, and moral ambiguity as the last two games, but it has a new-gen look. Even though the changes aren’t big, the main character now has a voice actor, the gunplay is better, and (surprise!) you don’t have to look inside crates to loot them.

This is a more streamlined version of a recipe that has become a classic. As usual, the frame rate drops, and sometimes scary bugs appear, but there’s so much going on that it’s hard to feel too bad about it. Again, Bethesda has put a lot of fun but unimportant things into this game, making it one of the most addicting and fun games of this age. If you get stuck in, it will take you weeks to get out.

8. Residents Evil 7: Biohazard

Let’s be honest. Resident Evil felt like a foot that had been out of the refrigerator for too long. A bit, well, strange. After Resi 4 took the third-person shooter to new heights and made it what it is today, things got a little less interesting. 2017 was the year that Resi got its groove back, and you should be very afraid.

Resident Evil 7 is a survival horror game played from the first-person perspective that turns the series on its head. You sneak through a run-down house in Louisiana, where your wife has gone missing, looking for her. Fans of movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”? Check. Fear of the body as a whole?

Also, look into that. Add to that a story that will make you forget to breathe for a while, and Resident Evil 7 is an exciting rollercoaster ride that changes the whole series. You’ll know the green flowers, but this new kind of horror makes you creep through the halls even when you want to run away.

7. Titanfall II

When we hear about a first-person game where you can run along walls and then double-jump into a big mechanical Titan, we pay attention right away. Titanfall 2 does all of these things and much more. When the first Titanfall game came out on Xbox in 2014, we asked, “But where’s our single-player?” Respawn said, “Fine!” in answer.

“In this second part, how about we tell the story of a captain and his Titan? One where you slowly get Titan weapons that look like they could split the world in two? What about a stage where you can press a button to go back in time? How about a few hours of fast-paced action with lots of ideas that make every game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare look dull?” Well, that sure shuts us up. If you add Bounty Hunt, which is a must-have online mode that is a capitalist’s worst fear, we’ll never say that Respawn is lazy again.

6. D2: Destiny

How could Destiny 2 beat the first game, which was a life sink that never ended? The answer is pretty obvious: more of the same, but better, nicer, and just more Destiny. The sequel makes the space-traveling, gun-collecting, number-raising MMO look brand new in almost every way.

In almost every way, you can see how Bungie improved from the last game. There are more things to do in the places you explore, and the tools that help your character grow and the things you do to make that happen are more detailed. This game is hard to put down because it has action, online, and character growth all in one. And now that new things have been added, there has never been a better time to start playing Destiny 2.

5. Overwatch

If Valve doesn’t want to make Team Fortress 3, we’ll get Blizzard to do it. Since the company that made World of Warcraft had never made a shooter before, it doesn’t make any sense that Overwatch is one of the best team FPS games ever. Each of the colorful heroes has skills that should make it hard to play the game (Tracer can go back in time, for crying out loud!) But everything works out in the end, so we can fire bows and arrows, sky dragons, walls of ice, and chains through the air for hours and hours without feeling like we’re cheating or that it’s not fair.

4. Forza Horizon 4

Forza Motorsport 7 is more serious, but Forza Horizon 4 is free for Xbox Games Pass members. This game is one of the best ways to show off the Xbox One’s technology because it is easy to play. Horizon 4 takes the sandbox series to a smaller, more winding version of Britain and adds a bunch of exciting races.

Also back are the silly Showcase Events, which are just as funny as they were before. Want to race the Flying Scotsman as it speeds through the Highlands toward Edinburgh? You’re tired, so go for it. This is one of the most visually interesting Xbox One games because the seasons change and add lots of snow and bright reds. The sharp control model, which is just arcade-friendly enough, is still the best in its category.

3. What Remains of Edith Finch

You really don’t want to know too much about this before you play. It’s smart, clever, and makes you feel things in a way that few games do. In the story, the main character, Edith, looks at her family tree to learn about her cousins, all of whom died young and sad deaths. Each story is made up of different parts and can be as short as a punch in the gut or as long as an emotional look into a character’s life.

It’s amazing how well everything fits together. Few games have been able to tell a story about life, love, and death with so many different ideas, ways to play, and just feelings. It’s a beautiful game that everyone should have in their collection.

2. Control

What a tricky title for a book! Even though in Control you play a cool office chief who can move people with her mind, you never really feel in charge. In Remedy’s great action-adventure game, nothing is what it seems to be. The Oldest House is the most interesting place to play a video game because it takes place in a weird, twisty government building.

While the walls and ceilings of this labyrinth twist around you, Remedy puts you in tough fights where you can use Jesse’s telekinetic skills in new ways. As you float around like a young Magneto and smash enemies with office furniture, it feels like you’ve been thrown into an exciting TV show. One in which the lead character is the worst person ever to push a pencil.

1. Fortnite

Fortnite is a monster that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. It has tens of millions of players and is one of the few games that is a true cultural phenomenon. Whether they’ve played the game or not, kids, celebs, and football players all floss like crazy. The fact that the battle royale mode with 100 people wasn’t even the main game was even more surprising. It started out as a live survival and co-op game.

Battle Royale was added to make it more famous, but it ended up taking over the whole world. Even though building and fighting are already strong parts of the game, the fact that it has seasons with constantly changing metastories, secrets, rules, and other things keeps it interesting, even though the core gameplay stays the same.
