Indian-origin couple charged with committing forced labour in US

Harmanpreet Singh and Kulbir Kaur, a couple of Indian descent, have been charged with physically abusing and torturing a relative, an immigrant, at their convenience store in Virginia, USA. The victim was allegedly coerced into working for little pay by the couple using “various coercive means” such taking away his immigration papers, abusing him physically, threatening him, and living in substandard conditions.

Between March 2018 and May 2021, he was subjected to physical abuse, threats of force, other serious harm, and, at times, deplorable housing conditions in order to force him to work long hours for little money.

At Singh’s store in North Chesterfield, they forced the victim to perform labor and services, such as working as the cashier, preparing food, cleaning, and maintaining store records.

The victim’s immigration documents were purportedly taken away by the defendants, who also allegedly subjected him to physical abuse, threats, and inhumane living circumstances inside a convenience store in North Chesterfield, according to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Singh’s cousin was the victim, but his name was withheld.
