Christine Jorgenson
When Christine Jorgensen had surgery to change her gender in 1952, she was the first transgender person to make national news. She was a strong supporter of equal rights for women, and her life story was widely known. Christine Jorgensen: A Personal Biography was the title of the book she wrote about herself in 1967. The book was turned into a movie, and she got money from the movie rights.
Jorgensen was born in 1926, and he grew up in the Bronx, New York. George William, her father, was a builder. He was close to her mother, Florence Davis Hansen. As Jorgensen grew up, he started to like his guy friends.
Jorgensen joined the U.S. Army when she was 19, and she served from 1945 to 1946. She started looking for answers about her life as a guy after she got out of the military.
She started to learn about sex transition surgery at the beginning of the 1950s. During the operation, the scrotum was cut and the penis nerve endings were pulled inside the body. A few years later, Jorgensen had vaginoplasty, a surgery that made a new vagina for her.
Jennifer Jane Grace
Laura Jane Grace is a transgender activist who is also an artist and a singer. Since 2012, she hasn’t been seen. Her band, Against Me!, has put out seven studio albums and played all 50 states and 29 countries.
Grace has also written a book and a 10-part documentary series called True Trans With Laura Jane Grace. The book is a nonfiction account of her change from male to female, and the docuseries is up for an Emmy Award for News & Documentary.
Grace is a singer, but she also helps people in need. She has helped raise money for homeless LGBT kids with Miley Cyrus for the Happy Hippie Foundation. She has also worked with Vice Media to do a number of interviews and talks.
