Wildfires on the island of Maui in Hawaii have destroyed homes and businesses and forced thousands of people to leave their houses.

The old town of Lahaina has been hit the hardest. At least six people have died in the fires, officials said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fires were still going strong, and firefighters and search-and-rescue teams were working to put them out.
In the meantime, US President Joe Biden has sent help from the government.
Aerial photos show that the fires in Lahaina have destroyed a number of buildings, but officials say it is still hard to know how bad the damage really is.
The National Weather Service said that the fires were made worse by a mix of low humidity and strong winds from Hurricane Dora, which was far away. These winds had gusts of more than 60 mph (97 kph). The fire spread along the coast of Lahaina, setting boats and the harbor on fire.

Images taken by satellites show where the fires are going. Some people are said to have jumped into the ocean to get away from the fires, and the US Coast Guard said it saved at least a dozen of them.

On the western tip of Maui, there is an old town called Lahaina. It is home to 12,000 people and a famous place for tourists to visit. Around 2,100 people have had to leave their homes because of the fires. They are staying in shelters.

Due to the fires, many people still don’t have power or cell phone service, and West Maui’s 911 service was down on Wednesday. Officials told people to stay away from Lahaina for their own safety, so all roads into the town were closed except for those used by emergency cars.
