Luis Cevallos Car Accident

Luis Fernando Cevallos-Mendoza, 24, was the driver of a brand new 2022 Kia Stinger, when he slammed into a tractor trailer at a criminally high rate of speed, on Tonnelle Avenue at the Paterson Plank Road overpass around 2:15 a.m., Wednesday morning. The high speed (confirmed by area surveillance video), appeared to be the only factor, responders said. The top of the Kia was sheared off and the sedan went another 30 to 40 feet before it finally came to a stop against a wall of the overpass (video showed).

His passenger, Alexis B. Rodriguez, age 27, of Bergenfield, was also killed instantly. Cevallos had just been stopped by North Beren Police, about 15 minutes prior to the deadly crash, for; Reckless Driving, Speeding (in excess of 100 MPH), Failure to Stop at a Traffic Signal, and Violation of a Provisional License (driving after hours). During the traffic stop, Alexis stated to the officer: “We’re on a first date, me and him” to which the officer replied to her “Almost getting killed, is not the way to have a first date”! Cevallos was cited for three of the four offenses (Reckless Driving, Running the Red Light, PL Violation), and ordered to go home. Sadly, he failed to follow the officers instructions, and approximately 20 minutes later, they were both pronounced dead at the scene of the horrific crash. (bio by Jay Lance)
